As a mom who wants to be more eco-friendly, I’ve been going through my medicine cabinet and makeup bag to see what changes I can make from organic skin care products to natural shampoos. So when the folks at The Natural Dentist, a 13-year-old natural oral care company, offered to send samples of their toothpastes and mouth rinses, I thought this was a great time to try some natural products and share my finding with you.
Tastes great
I tried the Pre-Brush Whitening Rinse and the Healthy Teeth & Gums Whitening Plus Toothpaste. My children tried the Healthy Teeth Sparkly Berry Blast for Kids.
At first I was a bit hesitant since I had heard that other brands of natural toothpaste were nasty. Not to fear with the Natural Dentists products – they tasted great. The kids liked their toothpaste too – both the taste and the sparkles. I found their products to be more “gritty” than regular toothpastes and mouth rinses, but it wasn’t unpleasant and the kids didn’t mind.
In fact (and this sounds so incredibly dorky) I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed using mouth rinse and tooth paste so much. Both products left my mouth tasting and feeling great – and my teeth felt clean for hours afterwards, even after eating. It was so pleasant, that using their products were easy to add to my grooming routine in the morning and evening.
Works well
Did the products whiten my teeth? Well, my teeth are pretty white already, so it was hard to notice a big difference. Still I think they did whiten up a bit. However, using their toothpaste and rinse was much more pleasant than using whitening strips, which are kind of icky and leave a peroxide taste in your mouth. (I’ve also found that whitening strips make my teeth more sensitive, so I don’t like to use them regularly.)
My only complaint with the Healthy Teeth & Gums Whitening Plus Toothpaste was that you need twice as much of it than you do regular toothpaste, since it doesn’t foam up as well. That’s probably because their toothpastes don’t contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which is a foaming detergent. According to The Natural Dentist website, “SLS can irritate your mouth and has been linked to canker sores.”
As far as cavity fighting goes, the Natural Dentist toothpastes contain as much fluoride as my regular brand. They claim that the peppermint and sage oils help prevent gingivitis and reduce and prevent plaque, too. See their FAQs page for more information.
New, low prices
The Natural Dentist recently announced a drop in retail prices (up to 30%) for all mouth rinses to make natural oral care more accessible. The prices have gone from $9.99 to a suggested retail price of $6.99 for a 16-ounce bottle.
For a limited time only, The Natural Dentist is also offering a coupon for $1.50 off any product from The Natural Dentist line of toothpastes or mouth rinses. This coupon can be found at thenaturaldentist.com/pricecut.
